Once they’re up and moving and ready for visitors

Be ready for that day when they start feeling pretty good and are chomping at the bit to leave the room and maybe go for a stroll in the hospital’s garden/ park.

  • If they’ve just started to move around again they might ask you to escort them up and down the hallway.
  • Sometimes hospital staff will allow you to borrow a wheelchair. Give your family member or friend a tour of the hospital if they need to get out of their room.
  • Depending on the hospital they might even allow you to move the whole bed out into the hospital’s garden/ park. Be sure to ask the nurse in charge before you go unplugging things.

Back home

If you couldn’t make it in to visit or they didn’t want visitors while they were in hospital, don’t feel bad. Oftentimes it’s actually right when they’re back home when they can use help the most. They may have personal needs they need help with that are just things that the rest of us take for granted until we are in their position.:

  • washing/ drying hair
  • putting nail varnish on toenails
  • do the shopping
  • cook a meal
  • Cleaning the house and bathroom for them
  • Walking their dogs/ taking care of their pets
  • Check on them

It’s things like this that they need help with. Sometimes for weeks, months once they are home from hospital.
